Margaret (Mint) Chapin died peacefully on Sunday, October 7, 2007, in Brush, CO, with her son Bo (Robert), her daughter Ming (Mary Anne) and other family members by her side. She was 90 at the time of her death. Mint was born and raised in Petersburg, Virginia, and attended art school in New York. During the early stages of WWII, she met her husband, Edwin K. (Ted) Chapin in Petersburg while he was stationed at Fort Lee. Shortly after their marriage in 1942 he was sent overseas where he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre in London. Upon his return, almost three years later, he and Mint made their home and raised their family in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. Mint returned to Petersburg in 1990. She later moved to the Petersburg Home for Ladies, an assisted living facility where she lived for about four years. Her family, all living in the West, moved her to Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush earlier this year, to be near Bo and his wife Sandy. Mint was active for many years in the Garden Club of America. She worked for twenty years at the Mill Pond House in Oyster Bay, NY. During those years she flourished in creating silk flower arrangements, which were sold at the Mill Pond House, or 'the shop' as she liked to call it. Mint was a skilled artist – working in pastels, pencil, oil, and watercolor. In her later years she enjoyed this past time, and gave her work to her friends and family. She was also an avid reader until she lost most of her sight to glaucoma. Mint was preceded in death by her husband Ted in 1975. She is survived by her son Bo of Snyder, CO, her daughters Ming and Marg, both of the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as three grandchildren, Deech Chapin-Rienzo of San Francisco, his twin sister Miranda Ierardi of Siena, Italy, Ned Chapin of Laramie, WY, and two great-grandchildren, as well as her daughter-in-law, Sandy Chapin. Mint requested cremation. A graveside memorial service will be held on Monday, October 29 at the Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, Mint's family requests gifts be made to Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center Foundation, 122 Hospital Road, Brush, CO 80723, where she was so lovingly cared for during her final months.
