Maria "Josie" Contreras passed away June 10, 2026, at her home in Brush. She was born on November 10, 1956, in San Juan, Texas, to Manuela and Norberto Contreras. In 1964, her family moved to Colorado, where they made their home in Sedgwick County.

In 1994, Josie moved to Brush for work, where she was employed delivering clothes for Brush Cleaners. Through her job, she met many people who became lifelong friends. Josie enjoyed camping and fishing, but her greatest joy was digging in her garden, where she could spend hours tending to the soil she loved. She also took pride in keeping her driveway clear during the winter months. Known for her strong work ethic and generous spirit, she often helped others, including clearing snow for her neighbor, Jill.

When Josie was diagnosed with breast cancer and lung cancer, she bravely chose not to pursue treatment so she could fully enjoy the time she had left. Throughout her journey, she was supported with love and care by Mike and her many friends.

Josie is survived by Mike Morgan; her brothers, Mike (Eva) Contreras of Julesburg and Joe Contreras of Ovid; her sisters, Maria of Ovid and Berta of Georgia; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Josie will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and the friendships she cherished. She leaves behind a legacy of love and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held for Josie at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 340 Stanford St. Brush, CO, Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 1:00 PM, followed by a short time of fellowship. Inurnment will take place later that afternoon at Ovid Cemetery.
