Maria Isabel Ortiz passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. After a long-term illness, she was able to spend her final moments in the comfort of home and in the presence of those who loved her.
Maria was born on September 16, 1935, to Atilano and Fedelina Madrid in Taos, New Mexico. Her mother passed away when she was a child and she was raised by her father Atilano and Erminia Madrid. She later married Amado Ortiz, and together they built a family of eight children, creating a legacy of love that would span generations.
Maria was the heart and matriarch of her family. Nothing brought her greater joy than having everyone together, surrounded by the love, laughter, and connection that made family so special to her. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, each of whom was part of the family legacy she cherished so deeply.
Maria enjoyed fishing, reading the Bible, going to Blackhawk and spending time with her loved ones. She also had a hilarious sense of humor and a gift for making people laugh. Her warmth, strength, faith, and unforgettable personality made her a special presence in the lives of those who knew and loved her. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories she created and the love she shared will continue to live on through the generations of her family.
Maria is survived by her children: David Ortiz (Lisa), Mary Ramos, Amado Ortiz Jr. (Alicia), Teresa Martinez, and Pete Ortiz; her brothers: Henry and Frank Madrid; her grandchildren and extended family members who will forever cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Atilano (Erminia) and Fedelina Madrid; her husband, Amado Ortiz; her children, Leroy, Jim and Marcella Ortiz; her granddaughter, Renee Benavides; her sisters, Margaret Madrid and Pricilla Riegel; and her brothers, Roger, Ernie, Gilbert, Teddy and Luciano Madrid and Teddy Casias.
Maria’s life was a testament to the importance of family, faith, laughter, and love. She leaves behind a family forever shaped by her presence and a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved her. She will be remembered always and missed more than words can express.
