Martha Bernice Mason, 89, of Fort Morgan, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, April 20, 2007. She died peacefully in her home with her family by her side. Martha, along with her twin sister, was born April 28, 1917, in Newport, AR to Gilbert & Della Barwick. She grew up in a family of 9 brothers & sisters. As a young girl, she enjoyed singing with her sister, Carnece. On Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939, Martha married her best friend, Marquis Mason in Banner, AR. Soon after their marriage, they began their family. The Mason family moved to Colorado where Martha worked as a nurses aide at St. Anthony Hospital for more than 20 years. After retiring, the Mason's moved to Fort Morgan in 1978. They lived out their golden years together in this community caring for their yard and garden. They also provided child care in their home for many families in Fort Morgan. On her birthday, April 28, 1985, Martha said goodbye to her best friend, Marquis. She continued to live her life as a widow with the same determination she had possessed all her life. She desired to continue living in her home and caring for the children in her day care. Martha was a woman of strong character and possessed a work ethic that all who knew her will never forget. She came to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior in her younger years. She loved the Lord and spoke longingly of going home to heaven to see her Savior. Upon her death, Martha was the oldest living member of Platte Valley Baptist Church. Her family has great joy in knowing that she is in heaven and at peace. Survivors include her five children, Keith, and his wife Carmen, of Loveland, CO; Janice Robinson of Fort Morgan; Marquis Mason Jr, of Carning, CA; Marian Gleason, and her husband, Vic, of Elizabeth, CO; and Marjorie Morasky of Rome, TX. She was blessed with 20 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and 2 great – great grandchildren. In addition to her husband preceding her in death, her son, Gilbert, and granddaughter, Julia Mason, and a great-great granddaughter, Allyssa Spurgeon preceded her in death. A celebration of Martha's life will be Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at 11:00 AM at the Platte Valley Baptist Church in Fort Morgan. Visitation will be at the Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary on Monday from 4 – 8 PM. Friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the Platte Valley Baptist Church or to Hospice & Palliative Care of North Colorado in Fort Morgan.
