Mary Bauer. 94. died early Sunday morning, May 3, 2009, at the Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan . She was born December 1, 1914, in Somerset, Pennsylvania, to Louis and Juliann Lantos. At the age of 4, she moved with her family to Colorado, where they bought a 160-acre farm between Fort Morgan and Brush. She often shared fond memories of her "prairie hills home" and of attending Brush Central School. In August of 1933, she married Jake E. Bauer, and they made their home in Fort Morgan, where they raised their 4 children. After ten years, they purchased a 10-acre tract on E. Platte Avenue and built an open-air vegetable, fruit and grocery market known as Bauer's Gardens. On the same property, they later constructed a motel and Bauer's Drive-In Theater, which is still operating today. Following the sale of the E. Platte property in 1959, they moved to town, where Jake carried on with a landscaping business, and Mary found time to pursue some of her personal interests in painting, photography, crocheting and writing. Her childhood stories and poetry will be read and enjoyed by generations to come. Mary had been a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church ( now Shepherd of the Plains Lutheran Church ) since 1934 and was active in the Ladies Aid there for over 50 years. Mrs. Bauer is survived by two children: daughter Beverly and husband, John Morrison from Eureka, Calif., and son, Roger Bauer of Douglas, Arizona; sister Bettie and husband Richard Kolacny of Denver. She is also survived by grandchildren: Tamara Krening, Sharon Hunter, Andree Scown, Teresa Lake, Marc Morrison, Rhett Bauer and Jennifer Garrison , as well as 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She as preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Juliann Lantos, her husband, Jake E. Bauer, son Ira J. Bauer , daughter Barbara Krening, four brothers : Paul, Steve, Joseph and Louis and three sisters: Helen, Julia and Annie. Visitation will be Thursday, from 7 to 9 pm at the Heer Mortuary in Fort Morgan. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 am at Shepherd of the Plains Lutheran Church, 629 Ensign Street, with Pastor Troy Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens. Memorial gifts may be made to the Shepherd of the Plains Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
