Obituary

Minnie J. Findeis, 101, longtime Brush area resident, passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home. She was born July 13, 1907, in Burchard, NE, to William & Cora Doman. She graduated from Burchard High School in 1924. She attended Peru Teachers College in Nebraska for 1 ½ years. She accepted a teaching position and taught school in a small one-room school near Burchard. On July 18, 1928, Minnie married Stanley (Jack) Findeis in Beatrice, NE. The Findies' moved to Colorado and settled on a farm near Gary in 1931. A year later they moved several miles south near Woodrow, where they lived in a "dugout' home, built partially with sod. Over the next several years, Minnie was employed as a teacher in several different schools near Woodrow while her husband pursued his farming occupation. In 1951, Minnie and Jacked moved to a farm east and south of Gary. That location turned out to be in the oil fields in the "oil boom" days of the early 1950's. Minnie continued her education and commuted between Gary and Greeley, where she obtained her BA teaching degree from Colorado State College of Education (now known as University of Northern Colorado). She continued teaching at Central School in Brush for one year and taught at Weldona for another five years. In all, her teaching career spanned a period of 41 years. Minnie was a very active member of the United Methodist Church in Brush before her health began to fail. She was open-hearted and cared for people in many different ways, including opening her home to children. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Her only surviving family includes her "foster" family; 3 nieces and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 sisters, 3 brothers, and her parents. A funeral service will be held Monday, January, 19, 2009, at the Brush United Methodist Church, 1701 Edmunds Street at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in the Brush Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Brush on Monday from 9 – 12 AM.
