Nelda M. Center, 90, of Country Club Retirement Campus, Dover, Ohio, and a former resident of North Walnut Street, Dover, died Thursday, August 10, 2006. Born July 9, 1916, in Fort Morgan, Colorado, Nelda was the daughter of the late Robert B. and Carrie Alice Eyestone Spencer. She graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, and spent her lifetime sharing her considerable musical gifts with others. A busy and much sought after piano teacher, Nelda also taught music at Hudson (Ohio) High School, directing special choral groups, and spent twenty-six years accompanying the church choir at the Hudson Congregational Church. Additionally, with her flair for fun and theatre, she played, with gusto, the musical scores of many community theatre groups in the Hudson-Akron area. An outspoken, loving woman, Nelda was a devoted friend to many and known for her concern for the less fortunate. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in New Philadelphia. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Catherine (husband, Gordon) Thomas of Provo, Utah, Barbara Jane (husband, Robert) Scott of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Nancy Lee Doane of Draper, Utah; a son, John (wife, Kristin) Center, D.V.M. of Scio, Ohio; nineteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Nelda was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, E. John Center, in 1991; and by two sisters and three brothers. Her life will be celebrated in a service Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at 11 a.m., in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 521 Stratton Avenue S.W., New Philadelphia, Ohio. Bishop Brent Lloyd will officiate. Burial will be Friday, August 18, at 10 a.m., in Riverside Cemetery in Ft. Morgan. The Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary is in Charge of the local arrangements.
