Norma ("Jean") Pflager died on October 23, 2015 after a short illness. Norma was born in 1926 in Unionville, Missouri to Lloyd Emerson Pollock and Louise [Hancock] Pollock. The family moved to Brush, Colorado where she lived from ages two to thirteen. She was a resident of Fort Morgan for the past seventy-six years. In 1943 she married John E. "Pete" Mares, who died in an auto accident in 1950. They had three children, John E. Mares, Jr., Michael L. Mares, and Cheryl J. Mares. Norma married Jack R. Pflager in 1952. He died in 2003. They had one son, Jack W. Pflager. Norma worked at Sunset Manor in Brush as a nurse's aide for seven years, then at Valley View in Fort Morgan for two years. She became a CNA when Home Health opened up in Fort Morgan and worked there for ten years before retiring in 1991. She was a hospice volunteer for several years, a retired member of AARP, a member of Tom Glasco's Poetry and Writing Group, and a member of Gold Star Wives. She attended a nondenominational church. Norma wrote and self-published two books, Bittersweet Journal, about her sister Shirlee Wilson's battle with polio, and A Rebel at Heart, about her own life. She also wrote many articles and poems, some of which were published. She is survived by three of her four children, John E. Mares of Aztec, New Mexico, Cheryl J. Mares of Amherst, Virginia, and Jack W. Pflager of Ft. Morgan, Colorado. Her son Michael L. Mares died in 2011. Survivors also include four grandchildren, John E. Mares, III of Chesapeake, Virginia, Kelly Mares/Frazier of New York City, New York, Robin Mares and Jenny [Mares] Reed of Littleton, Colorado; thirteen great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; three step great-great grandchildren; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. One granddaughter, Karla J. Mares, preceded Norma in death. Her brother, Harold L. Pollock of Ft. Morgan, and two of her sisters, Melba I. Farnik of Brush, Colorado and Evelyn M. Lewis of Pasadena, California, also survive Norma. Two sisters, Wanda F. Pollock and Shirlee L. Wilson, and her parents preceded Norma in death. Norma was much loved by her family and her many friends. She was kindness itself. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
