Obituary

Ophelia "Mama Mecca" Derrera, 86, passed away Friday, August 6, 2010, at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush. She was born March 11, 1924, in El Paso, TX, to Teofilo & Hilaria Romero. Ophelia owned and operated a neighborhood bar in Denver for many years. It was during this time that she became known as "Mama Mecca". In 2005, after retiring, Ophelia moved to Brush to be near her daughter & son. She loved life, and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed, dancing, singing, playing slot machines, and cooking. Her most precious times were spent with her family. Survivors include her children, Clemente Martinez, Alice Leyba-Burge, Fermin Hinojos Jr., and Ricky Hinojos; 3 brothers, Jesse Romero, Pete Romero, and his wife, Rosa, Willie Romero and his wife, Rosenda, Phillip Romero, and his wife, Gloria; 2 sisters, Mary Palmer and her husband, Kent, and Jenny Bernal, and her husband, Ron; 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Derrera, 2 sons, Juan Reguerra and David Hinojos; 1 brother, Santos Romero; 3 sisters, Petra Ortiz, Isabel Vergas, and Micala Holguin; and her parents. Funeral services will be Friday, August 13, 2010, at 11:00 AM at the Horan & McConaty Funeral Chapel – Wadsworth & Yale in Lakewood. Interment will follow at 1:00 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 – 7 PM at the Heer & Dahl Mortuary in Brush and Friday from 9:30 until service time in Lakewood.
