Raymond Kenneth Winberg passed away peacefully on October 20, 2014, at the age of 97 at Valley View Villa in Fort Morgan. Ray was born on May 7, 1917, in Barnesville, CO, to Carl Gustaf and Signa (Sandh) Winberg. Ray enlisted in the Army Air Force in January 1942 and was discharged as a Technical Sergeant in1945. He was an instructor of aircraft mechanics when he was stationed at Chanute Field, Ill. He served overseas as a member of the 703rd bomb squad during WWII on bases in China, India, and Tinian Island. As crew chief for B29's he was one of the first soldiers to inspect the Enola Gay aircraft upon return from its bombing mission over Hiroshima. Upon his return to the States, he continued his education and graduated with a degree in diesel mechanics. Ray married Bonnie June Carpenter on June 22, 1951, in Fort Morgan, where they made their life-long home. Ray began farming in 1953 and made it his lifelong career. Ray is survived by his wife, Bonnie; two sons, Neal (Shelley) Winberg, of Westcliffe, CO and Terry (Cheryl) Winberg, of Fort Morgan; and one daughter, Robin (Jim) Gagnon, of Larkspur, CO; two granddaughters, Natasha (Duane Rorie) Winberg, and Malorie Winberg; two step-granddaughters, Alison Noon and Jennifer Bryant; two grandsons, Shane (Sarah) Winberg, and Cody Winberg; and one step-grandson, Matthew Gagnon. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lloyd (Anna) Winberg, Earl (Florence) Winberg, and Tony (Grace) Winberg; and one sister, Ellen (Bob) Erickson. From youth, Ray respected the word of God and used it to light the way for his personal life. He loved the simple teachings and demonstrations of Jesus, always doing that which pleased God. Following these examples left on record, his devotions remained a focus throughout his life. A memorial service to remember Ray will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at The Sanctuary West Campus, 14587 Highway 34, Fort Morgan.
