Richard "Dick" Lee Holmes, 96, passed away on January 15, 2026, at Eben Ezer in Brush, Colorado. He was born on October 29, 1929—the day of the Stock Market crash—to Hiley and Annetta Holmes in Sterling, Colorado. Richard was one of nine children.
Dick attended school in Sterling through the 8th grade before beginning work as a farmhand on family farms in Sterling, Merino, Atwood, Brush, and Fort Morgan. In later years, he became a welder with Mohrlang Fabrication.
During the late 1950s and 1960s, Dick completed his studies and earned his GED. He worked as a custodian for Brush Schools, and in 1968 he began a long career as a letter carrier with the Brush Post Office. He also served his community proudly as a member of the Brush Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years.
Following his retirement, Dick continued to stay active by working a variety of small jobs, including delivery work and stocking at a grocery store.
In 1949, Dick married Pearl Leis, and together they raised two children, Richard D. and Roberta Gale.
Dick is survived by his son, Rick (Sharon) Holmes of Brush; three grandchildren, James (Caren) Holmes, Carol (Wes) Butero, and Becci Meza; and great‑grandchildren Alexandra, Blake, Owen, Vinson, Molly and Toby.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl; daughter, Roberta Holmes; and eight siblings.
A private inurnment will be at Brush Memorial Cemetery.
