Robert L. Schwindt, 87, of Fort Morgan, died Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at The Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, Colorado. Bob was born on April 28, 1923 in Bayard, Nebraska to Henry H. and Mollie Schwindt. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp on December 7, 1942, exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Bob served in the Marine Corp 4th Division during World War II, seeing combat in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian Island and Iwo Jima when the Marines secured them. Honorably discharged in 1945, Bob returned to Nebraska to begin his farming career and married Betty D. Schwartzkopf in 1947. Bob and Betty moved their four children to Fort Morgan in 1960 and continued their farming and cattle business through the early seventies. Bob sold cars and farm equipment for several years and enjoyed golfing, travel and music. Bob married Jean C. Hutcheson in October 1987 and they enjoyed many happy years and common interests. Bob and Jean have been active members of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Fort Morgan. Bob was also a member of the Elks Lodge and VFW. As a Marine, Bob danced at the Palladium Club in San Diego and made lifelong friendships. He carried the traits of strength, endurance and loyalty with him throughout his life regardless of hardships, loss or injury, heading into each day with strength and integrity. Bob had a great (albeit dry) sense of humor and treasured honesty and forthrightness. Robert is survived by his wife, Jean C. Schwindt; a daughter, Cynthia, of Aurora, CO; a son, Randy, of Ainsworth, NE; a daughter, Barbara Murray of Speedwell, TN; stepchildren, Linda Smith, Debra Roberts, Carol Foos and Bob Hutcheson. In addition, surviving Bob are seven grandchildren, Richard, Jennifer, Jason, Wade, Genevieve, Brandon and Clayton; four step-grandchildren, Laura, Steve, Mike and Raquel; eight great-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mollie; his first wife, Betty; a son, Jerry; his sister, Mildred Hardy; a brother, Albert "Smitty" and step-grandson, Sean Murray. Special thanks to friends, Gordon Gressett, the Schmall boys, Irvin Schall, the Stark family, the Joe Garcia family, Ed Lind, Elmer Dietrich and Joe Schulte. Too numerous to mention here we acknowledge and thank the many friends, neighbors and golf buddies who contributed so much to Robert Schwindt's earthly journey. May God richly bless you ALL. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 22rd at 1:30 PM at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, VFW or Disabled Veterans.
