Schan Marie Worley, 43, longtime area resident, came into this world in San Bernardino, California on May 2, 1970 and left the earth on August 31, 2013 from Fort Morgan, Colorado. As a child, Schan's family moved numerous times to different parts of the country, but Schan always considered the sand hill areas of Hemingford, Nebraska as home. In her younger years, she spent a lot of quality time in that area at her grandparent's ranch. In high school she spent time involved in 4-H, rodeo, pep squad, track and volleyball, and was selected prom queen her senior year. She graduated from Hyannis High School in 1988. Schan attended Chadron State College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1994, and a Bachelor of Science in Education in 2002, and was working towards completing her Masters in Art. Schan started teaching art at Abner Baker School in 2002. Prior to that Schan had a diverse work history which included working as an over the road truck driver, and as a full time glass blower at a gallery she owned and operated in Emporia, Kansas. While teaching at Baker, Schan also shared her passion of art with the inmates at the woman's correctional facility in Brush. In 2012, Schan started a successful business venture called Paint by Vodka where she taught and facilitated private party painting classes. She was an accomplished artist in a wide range of mediums such as pottery, stained glass, photography, blown glass, sewing, and painting. She loved sharing her love and knowledge about art with her students at Baker, and especially enjoyed seeing the light bulb come on when her kids grasped a new technique, theory, or mastered a new medium. If you ever saw Schan's classroom, you knew how much she loved her students and their art projects. Schan was also passionate about gardening, which is evident in the landscaping around the Baker School building, where Schan spent hours of her personal time, moving rock, and planting flowers and plants for everyone to enjoy. Schan is survived by the love of her life, and life partner, Elizabeth; her beloved four legged children, Tava, Paiytan, Buster and Cobie Ann; grandfather Bill Shrewsbury; aunt, Kim Mills; cousin, Kami Blumanthal; her Baker School family; all of her students and a group of close friends. Schan was preceded in death by her grandmother, Betty Shrewsbury and several special pets. A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 4:30 pm at the Ft. Morgan Jr. High School Auditorium. Services will conclude at the school. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Fort Morgan Humane Society in Schan's name so more animals can be helped in her memory.
