Stan Lampe, 86, of Fort Morgan, passed from this life peacefully on Monday, February 13, 2023.
He was born to Herb and Nora Lampe on May 16, 1936 in St. Francis, Kansas where he attended school until 1951 when the family moved to Wray, CO. After graduating from Wray High School in 1954, he attended college at Colorado University in Boulder and graduated in 1958. He began his teaching and coaching career in Paonia, CO before moving to Fort Morgan in the fall of 1959. In 1961 he married Nancy Dorn in Fort Morgan and three sons were born to this marriage, Brian, Blair and Brad.
Stan's very successful career as FMHS wrestling coach amassed a record of 275-59-5 with 7 state championships, 7 undefeated seasons, 91 consecutive dual meet wins, 15 tournament wins, 15 district and regional championships, 16 northern conference wins with 18 individual state champions.
In August 1968, he received his master's degree from UNC in Greeley. From 1985 until his retirement in 1995 he also served as Athletic Director. He was awarded the National High School Wrestling Coach of the Year in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1987 and was elected to the Colorado High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1997 by CHSCA. In May, 2022 the Fort Morgan School District named the high school gymnasium in his honor.
Besides wrestling, his favorite pastimes included fishing and camping with his sons, grandchildren, brother and friends, and spending time and taking pride in his garden. He especially enjoyed fishing trips to Alaska and Canada with his sons.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his son, Brad; and his brother, Jack.
He is survived bye his wife, Nancy; his sons, Brian (Sue) of Windsor, Blair (Katrina) of Eaton; five grandchildren, McKenzie Lampe and her husband, Michael Seamon of Snohomish, WA, Madison (Tom)Fontaine of Evans, CO, Montana Lampe of Carlsbad, CA, Zachary Lampe of Grand Junction, Aaron Lampe of Eaton; and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Levi Fontaine of Evans.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11 th at 1:00 pm in the Stan Lampe Gymnasium at the Fort Morgan High School.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the charity of your choice.
