Obituary

Sterling Boyd Mayes, 92, of Fort Morgan, died Monday evening at the Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan. He was born March 8, 1917 in Vanderpool, TX., to William and Emily Mayes. He married Pauline Decker October 4, 1941 in Dilley, TX. He was a mechanic for the State of Texas Highway department. He retired in 1979. Sterling and Pauline moved to Fort Morgan to be closer to their daughter, Nelwyn Hudson. He enjoyed telling stories of traveling in covered wagons, gardening, reading western books and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his daughter Nelwyn Hudson of Fort Morgan, his son Ronald Mayes of San Antonio, TX , one sister Malene Briggs of Wimberley, TX, one brother Chester Mayes of Aransas, TX, 3 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline, 1 grandson, and his parents. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-5 pm at the Heer & Dahl Mortuary in Fort Morgan. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 1:30 pm at the Calvary Baptist Church in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial donations to the Benevolent Fund of the Calvary Baptist Church 1120 State St. Fort Morgan, CO 80701.
