Verna Margery Higgins was born January 13, 1907 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She died peacefully Sunday morning, February 11, 2007 twenty-nine days after celebrating her 100th birthday with family and loved ones. Verna was born in Lincoln, Nebraska to Charles Higgins and Nellie Morton Higgins. She was the youngest of the four siblings with Edna, Doris, and Morton Higgins all preceding her in death, yet living into their nineties. On June 6, 1934, she married Durward E. Allen. Verna was preceded in death by her husband. Durward, with Verna by his side, served the First Christian Churches of Conrad, Montana; Rupert, Idaho; Wacomis, Oklahoma; Kallispell, Montana; Casper, Wyoming; Liberal, Kansas; and Kearney, Nebraska. Together they would serve another twenty churches as Interim in their retirement years. Verna would enjoy traveling to any congregation and said she was always fine as long as she had her bible, her sewing machine and her electric skillet. The Higgins family of six moved to Montana when Verna was very small, first staying with an Uncle in the Flathead Valley of Montana and later buying a dry farm near Fowler, Montana. School made up an important part of life with brothers and sisters attending school a half mile from the farm. This school later carried the Higgins family name and was the center of many social activities including a non denominational Sunday school with a minister who visited once a month. High school meant traveling about sixteen miles to town. To attend school, Verna boarded and worked in town taking care of the children in the home and cleaning while still attending classes. She attended Normal College at Dillon, Montana and summer school at Bozeman, Montana to receive her teaching degree. Verna's first teaching job was at Poulson, Montana, and several other Montana rural schools until she finally landed a job in her first "brick" school in Conrad, Montana. It was here that she met and married the handsome pastor of the First Christian Church. At the time of her marriage, married women stayed home and could not teach. As a teacher and Bible scholar, she taught many Sunday school classes. To this union there were four children: Daughter, Judee Filip of Denver, Colorado, sons: Dr. Ray Allen of Liberal, Kansas and wife Nancy, Roy Allen of Loveland, Colorado and wife Sally, daughter, Jan Redding and husband Joe. She leaves nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Verna's philosophy of life might be captured by her quote, "I'd rather wear out than rust out!" This approach to life has included an active pursuit of the spiritual, physical, mental and social aspects of life. She was our shinning light. "It will all work out", she would always say. She will be deeply missed by family and loved ones. Services will be held at South Broadway Christian Church at 23rd Lincoln Street, Denver, Colorado at 11:a.m. February 17th 2007. Memorial may be sent to South Broadway Christian Church in her name. Interment will be in Memory Gardens in Fort Morgan, CO.
