Verna Gertrude Zwirn, 73, of Brush, died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at East Morgan County Hospital. She was born Sept 9, 1936, in a three room cabin in Thermopolis,Wyoming. She was one of eleven children born to her parents, Rollin and Olive Wright. She married John Aughinbaugh. Their son, Robert was born first and then when she was five months pregnant with Russell, John was tragically killed in Oklahoma City, OK on Feb 3, 1956, by carbon monoxide poisoning. She didn't remember much about the funeral, only that he was buried in the Brighton Cemetery in Brighton, Colo. John served in the military and was given a funeral with military rites. She married Lester Reed. They were married for 28 years before getting a divorce in 1983. While married to Lester, she held several jobs, including working as a clerk in a grocery store in Fort Morgan, Colorado and she ran her own day care service out of her home in Brush, Colorado. On November 17, 1984, he then married Delmar Zwirn. They met while playing Bingo at the VFW in Brush. She and Delmar continued to provide daycare for children for many years and Verna was also the secretary for the Brush Lateral Ditch Company for the last six years. They raised chickens for a number of years and sold them locally. Verna enjoyed dancing, loved to cook and canning vegetables that she grew. She made jams, jellies, and her famous 7-Day lime (lye) pickles. She especially enjoyed time spent with her family. She crocheted blankets for every one of her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids and she crocheted afghans for veterans. She loved to keep her hands busy despite the fact that she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. She collected salt and pepper shakers which she started when she was a young girl and her brother-in-law, Adam Foote, gave her some money so she could get herself something at the store. She fell in love with a little set of ceramic puppies that said, "I'm Salt" and "I'm Pepper" on them. Verna was a member of the V.F.W. Auxillary.
