WILLIAM GALE DAVEY JR., 85, former Fort Morgan Chief of Police and Morgan County Sheriff, died Monday afternoon, July 11, 2011 at the Valley View Villa in Fort Morgan after just being diagnosed with lung cancer. Gale, as he was most commonly known, was born December 21, 1925 in Fort Morgan to William Gale Davey Sr. & Hildegarde (Poulsen) Davey. He married Lucille Averne Coleman in Saint Francis, KS on December 6, 1943. He served his country as a sergeant in the Army during WWII. Mr. Davey was active in law enforcement for over 25 years, serving as Fort Morgan Chief of Police for 19 years and Morgan County Sheriff for 8 years. He was a member of Saint Helena Catholic Church in Fort Morgan, and a lifetime member of the Elks and the V.F.W. He was an honorary fireman for the Fort Morgan Fire Dept., was a board member for Morgan County Community Corrections, and Co-president of the Brush Rodeo Association. He served as president of the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police, and was Colorado Racing Commissioner for 8 years. Gale had a lifetime interest in horses and racing. He was an accomplished horse breeder, rider, owner, and trainer. At the age of 80, he took on a new career as Steward for Arapahoe Park Horseracing, which he did for 4 years. Gale Davey is survived by his two children and their spouses, Nicky Davey & Diane, and Judy Billiard & Sonny, all of Fort Morgan; his grandchildren, Danette Ruppel & Bob, Erin Groves & Jeff, Bill Lorenzini, Donett Thomas & Robert; his step grandchildren, Deb Christensen & Bob, Brenda Vanderhout & Keith, and Linda Sandry & Dan, 20 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Fern Erickensen-Bresnahan, Rose Howard, and Dorothy Wilks; three brothers, Robert Davey, Charles Davey, and Albert Davey; his son, James Allen Davey; and his wife, Lucille Davey. Visitation will be Thursday, July 14th from 5 – 7 PM at the Heer & Dahl Mortuary Chapel in Fort Morgan with a Rosary Vigil beginning at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, July 15th at 10:30 AM at Saint Helena Catholic Church in Fort Morgan. Interment with military honors conducted by the V.F.W. Post 2551, will follow in Memory Gardens in Fort Morgan. Memorial donations may be made to Saint Helena Church, the American Cancer Society, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
