HEER MORTUARY & CREMATORY - FORT MORGAN LOCATION

The land that now houses the funeral home began as part of the farm owned by Abner S. Baker, one of Fort Morgan’s earliest settlers. Between 1888 and 1890, the property was formally plotted as the community grew.

By the early 1900s, the farm belonged to W. H. Clatworthy, who raised sheep and cultivated alfalfa on its five acres. Clatworthy was also known for owning the Clatworthy Hardware Company in 1907. Eventually, the farm was dedicated to the City of Fort Morgan and later sold to the Hayward family.

The first structure associated with the funeral home was built in 1904 as the private residence of Homer Acre. Acre purchased the property with the intention of establishing a mortuary, and in 1934, the home was remodeled to accommodate funeral services.

In 1940, Acre sold the business to Eugene H. Robinson, who soon partnered with Francis S. Jolliffe. Jolliffe entered the mortuary profession that same year, and by 1944, he had fully bought out Robinson’s interest.

The property changed hands again in 1951, when it was sold to J. Corder Smith, who quickly transferred ownership to Theron J. Cutler and Francis S. Jolliffe. Together, Cutler and Jolliffe operated the funeral home under the name Cutler–Jolliffe. That same year, the front façade was completely rebuilt, featuring the colonial-style columns that became a recognizable hallmark of the building.



After Cutler’s passing in 1971, Francis S. Jolliffe became the sole owner. In 1979, his son Pat Jolliffe purchased the business, continuing the family’s long-standing commitment to serving the Fort Morgan community. In 2000, Pat Jolliffe sold the funeral home to Don and Carol Heer, bringing together the Fort Morgan and Brush locations under the unified name Heer Mortuary and Crematory. After 45 years of dedicated service to Morgan County, Don and Carol passed the tradition forward in 2021, selling the business to Javan Jones and Jacque Clark. Their ownership continues the long‑standing legacy of local, family‑run funeral care serving the communities of Morgan County.
